She breathed in seven hundred years

and the centuries stopped;

the death of a prince forgotten

in the void between a heartbeat's beginning and its end.

 

Importunate, the child of modern days

drew out that age-old breath

in the shape of a single anguished answer:

Yes.

 

The hand that shook two worlds opened

and clasped only the power

to do everything but return

their love, given with her permission; and

 

waking, she sees now; the beat of a living heart

is longer than the stilled breath of half a millenium;

trapped in the eye of time she waits

for a blink.
